Gender identity issues, sometimes called gender dysphoria or gender conflict, occur when an individual feels an inconsistency between their physical gender and the gender they truly feel or identify with. This most commonly exhibits itself as a physical discomfort with the gender one was assigned at birth, including the feeling of being in the wrong body. Children with gender dysphoria may express disgust of their own genitals or a certainty that they will grow up to be the opposite sex. Some individuals with gender identity issues treat this feeling by physically modifying their bodies to better match their gender identity. Gender dysphoria comes with it an increased risk for depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, and bullying. Being human is often tough. Sometimes we lose our way and can feel stuck and overwhelmed. Sometimes we would like to change parts of our lives or ourselves but don’t know how. Therapy can be an empowering way to promote healing, growth, and wellness. Often, we initially seek treatment to address a specific concern and then begin to uncover other areas of our lives in which we want to make meaningful change. My goal is for this process to feel supportive, affirming, and appropriately challenging.
I work with adults and couples of all ages who come from a wide variety of backgrounds. I am trained as a generalist, and welcome clients who might present with a number of different presenting concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, family difficulties, and identity issues.
My counseling provides a safe place to heal from difficult experiences, develop skills, experience growth, and appreciate your strengths. I offer virtual & in-person counseling with teens and adults, couples, and families. My affirmative approach includes learning new skills and changing beliefs and behaviors that are no longer serving you, all in a supportive and accepting environment. If you are motivated to change your life and explore new perspectives, I look forward to working with you!
