Hello. My name is Jennifer Given-Helms (she/her/hers pronouns) and I am a licensed clinical social worker.
Counselor in Bellingham, WA
About 1/3 of my clients are exploring gender or identify outside of the gender binary. While specific training in gender is relatively minimal, I have sought out extensive training where accessible and continue to educate myself in an ongoing way to offer informed care. As a cis-gender individual I will never know what it is to live in this experience, but I do know of the experience.
Many of my clients experience PTSD or CPTSD. I am actively training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (the cutting edge of trauma work) to be able to serve the needs of clients with CPTSD effectively.
I combine my Vini Yoga training with the Mindfulness focus I pursued in my MSW program. Mindfulness is much broader than we sometimes assume. Assisting clients in finding ways to access mindfulness in their day to day lives, and developing individual practices with them to support their practices are both regular parts of my work with clients.
I interned for 2 years with an Arts therapist, and continued to work in her practice for my first year after graduation. Art allows us to access parts of our experience that may not have words, to come from our left brain experience, and to connect with our creative selves. These can be powerful tools in therapy.
I am currently in the process of training for this amazing modality. The somatic focus builds on my yoga and mindfulness trainings in powerful ways. Sensorimotor psychotherapy is an especially powerful tool for people who recovering from PTSD and CPTSD.
