You may not think therapy is a place to talk about politics. Yet it can be a great opportunity to discuss how the current political climate may be causing stress in your daily life.

You may be feeling lonely and isolated. Or you may feel numb and confused. Grief and loss affect everyone differently. It's important to know feelings of grief come in waves — one moment you may be fine, then the next moment you feel devastated. Sad isn't bad. The love you had for the person or the dream you lost is equal the grief you feel. And it does get better, one day at a time.

Did you know all kinds of healthy and unhealthy conditions can be passed down through generations? If you're experiencing anxiety and depression, for example, it may have more to do with your family of origin than something in your current life. I was trained in Bowen Family Systems, which emphasizes looking at the family as a whole to help understand the origins of disorders. In other words, no one is an island; we are all connected. This viewpoint can help you feel more empowered to make changes in your life and your relationships.

When something bad happens in your childhood, it can get stuck in the brain. You may even notice when you think about it you can see, smell, and hear the event just like it was happening right now. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps transform the memory into something that does not cause distress in your current life. You will still remember the event, yet it won't feel like it's happening right now, and you won't feel the body sensations (increased heart rate, sweaty palms, fast breathing) you may have experienced previously. I am trained in Level I and II EMDR, and I am pleased to provide this service to my clients.

It may seem strange that something that happened a long time ago can still be affecting you now. They say that times heals, right? It's true that time can help heal the heart, yet sometimes troubles you may be having in your life now can be traced back to early traumatic experiences. I am trained in EMDR, which is a specialized treatment for trauma. It can help you "put to bed" memories from the past that are causing current distress. Hope is possible.
