My Background and Approach
Working with couples is very different from working with individuals. That's why I became certified in Imago Relationship Therapy. It's an approach that sees your relationship as "the client." With Imago, you'll come to see how each of you has a responsibility to caretake and contribute positively to your relationship. This is easier said than done! It's all too easy to get focused on what your partner is "doing wrong"... thinking, "If s/he would just do this differently, then everything would be okay." With Imago, the focus is on learning together. You'll learn why certain conflicts keep reappearing and how to utilize conflict as a key to growth. You'll also be asked to devote a lot of energy to developing positive habits together. This helps increase gratitude in your relationship. Did you know that increased gratitude has been shown to increase sexual satisfaction? Oftentimes, it's small changes sustained over time, that make the biggest difference.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe our intimate partner relationships are meant to be a tremendous source of satisfaction, learning, and growth in our lives. Enjoying life together through a shared commitment, and shared interests, activities, and values is a worthwhile adventure. I also know that in the best of relationships there are difficulties to be faced and worked through. I've always been drawn toward curiosity, toward having deeper understanding of why things are happening the way they are. I'm inclined to look beneath the surface content, and I will help you do the same. My partner and I both have a regular meditation practice. We use tools from our various learnings to support our individual growth and the growth of our relationship. I believe it's important, when dealing with relational discord, to look within myself to see what's going on with me and how I'm contributing to what's happening in our relationship, and I work best with people who share a willingness & interest to do the same.
