About My Clients
I pride myself on being adaptable. I'm not here to tell you who you are, what kind of work you're ready to do, or what you should strive to achieve in your life. Since I opened my practice over a decade ago, I've been open and receptive to those in the area that have sought me out. I strive to care, listen, and understand you and how you see things. Coming out of that, we'll work to determine the best way toward the growth you want.
My Background and Approach
I completed my Masters Degree in 2005, then worked in various community-connected settings in Sherburne County and then Minneapolis. In 2013, I started my own practice, named You Therapy. The clinic name is pretty generic, because I wanted to make sure that my focus was more on whoever comes through the door than some theory or personal preference. While I do incorporate various trainings, theories, and parts of my education into practice, I still maintain a You-centered approach first. Starting with my clients and their life context at the center, I listen and empathize first. Beyond that, I am family-systems educated as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I also have training and years of experience in EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), IFS (Internal Family Systems), and Emotionally Focused Therapy. Additionally, I work in the frames of the Polyvagal Approach and how our fight/flight/freeze/shut-down responses relate to earlier adverse experiences.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
Personally and clinically, I've come to believe that we all can grow, adapt, and heal. I've also learned that getting stuck in bad patterns, learning painful and often unintended lessons, and struggling to grow are all very common. As a therapist that continually tries to grow and as a person that has done his own therapy, I've felt changes to problems that I previously wouldn't have been able to identify. Like "I guess I'm a little anxious about this thing" to feeling much more relaxed down to even noticing that my shoulders and muscles around my eyes are less tense; weird, huh? Nobody that knows me would call me "bubbly"; I don't exude sunshine and rainbows. That said, EVERYONE is born deserving love. Through abuse, neglect, tragedy, or misunderstandings, your basic needs get disrupted. I'm here to help restore your sense of deserving good things. Everyone: any gender identity, sexuality, ethnicity, religion/non-religious, ideology, cognitive or physical ability, sports fandom.
