About My Clients

Engaging in therapy means committing to yourself and your own growth. I work most effectively with people who take themselves seriously and are willing to put in the time needed for deep and enduring growth. I am willing to work with anyone who is committed to themselves and their own growth. Of the populations I serve, approximately 60% identify as people of color, and 85% identify as members of LGBTQ communities.

My Background and Approach

The style of therapy I prefer is primarily psychodynamic, with an emphasis on engaged dialogue in the present. Focusing on mitigating symptoms is a helpful first step for therapy. For longer-lasting change that leads to growth I find it vital to work at deeper levels of personality so as to effect change at the sources of blockages that stall personal growth. Psychodynamic work gives us this range of possibilities. The focus on dialogue keeps each session collaborative and draws on the healing power of being present together. As we talk, I attune to you as a whole person—your verbal expression, affect, posture, gestures, life-experiences, and way of being in the world—so I can meet you with a highly personalized approach to therapeutic treatment. I am a psychoanalyst licensed in New York and New Jersey. I am a Certified Gestalt Therapist. In addition, I am certified in mindfulness-based meditation and interventions, and have extensive training in somatic psychotherapy.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Change can come unbidden, and a lot of change is beyond our grasp. At the same time, we exercise some degree of agency to shape change in our lives. At the individual level, we can engage in therapy or self-compassion practices and self-actualize in our professions and relationships. Beyond that, we can and should join together with others to effect progressive change more broadly. I've been a part of LGBTQ+ communities for my entire life. A working-class white man, I'm an active ally to BLM and the Movement for Black Lives, which means I do a lot of listening, and I stand in solidarity with many progressive organizations that strive against structural racism and classism. For me, all of these injustices converge in the trouble aggressive capitalism visits on our environment. I've been a devoted meditator for over 20 years in a vajrayana buddhist context, so that flows into all I do as well. I want you to be at ease. If you're not, we could talk about it.
