About My Clients
Paul provide couples, marriage and premarital counseling and individual counseling. I work online and am licensed in the state of Michigan. Paul provides couples counseling in Kalamazoo area as that is where he lives but I can work with clients all over the state including Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, Detroit. People who come to see me tend to appreciate that I have lots of evidence based training in models working with couples including Emotionally Focused Therapy and Internal Family Systems.
My Background and Approach
Client's and their systems tend to appreciate my gentle but active approach when doing couples counseling and individual counseling. I gently interrupt clients when I notice them engaging in their typical problematic patterns that they experience at home. Creating Safety through slowing down and better understanding patterns is essential in the therapy models I have been trained specifically for working with couples. Client's tend to appreciate learning how to more effectively engage with each other and themselves while working with me. My main approach draws from Internal Family Systems (Intimacy from the inside out) and emotionally focused Therapy as these models are non blaming, and in my experienced are effective at changing negative communication styles for couples.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I have been drawn to Internal Family Systems because it fits wonderfully with my worldview as a progressive Christian (Episcopalian). I believe that we are all made in the image of God and are basically good even though at times we can all behave poorly in the world. This informs my compassionate, open hearted ,non judgemental approach as I work to help people heal the parts of themselves that have been wounded and work with the parts of them in a non shaming way that have wounded others.
