Maeve Carter (They/Them)

Accepting Clients

Hello! My name is Maeve and I am an intern clinical mental health therapist. I am in my final year of study.

Clinical Trainee in New Mexico

About My Clients

I have been in mental health treatment since I was 14. I have firsthand experience in navigating the diagnosis process, dealing with insurance, looking for academic accommodations, and living a neurodiverse life. I am a member of the LGBTQ community and understand some of the impacts a marginalized identity holds in our society. I carry these firsthand perspectives into my work, and hope to met clients realistically where they are, to help them access the care and support they deserve.

My Background and Approach

I value a collaborative approach in therapy, where the client is able to customize their time in session towards goals that are the most important to them. I come from a CBT background, but in supervision I have been introduced to the narrative approach, NARM ideology, and have taken a personal interest in geek and tabletop roleplaying therapy. I hope to one day get licensed through AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists) in order to work as a sex therapist within marginalized communities such as the queer, transgender, disabled, elderly, and healthy at any size folks.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I utilize feminist counseling theory in my approach to therapy. I feel as though the individual outcomes of living in a racist, patriarchal, colonizing, capitalist society have deep impacts on mental health, individual access to support, and experiences of marginalization. Most of my current clients have experienced either racial, sexual, financial, gender, or ability based discrimination, which can all compound the impacts of trauma. I feel that trauma informed therapy approaches should be mandatory to therapist training. I hope to realistically support clients in processing the anger, resentment, and trauma living in such systems can create.
