About My Clients
I love working with many different kinds of people. One trend I’ve noticed is that I enjoy eclectic, creative, unconventional folks, & free thinkers. I also work with survivors of childhood emotional neglect. I find it very rewarding to help people who are shut off from their emotional selves to open the door to this world inside and connect to what’s most personal and vital within.
My Background and Approach
Clients want a therapist who actively engages with them in sessions - and rightfully so. I believe the most therapeutic engagement is something different from advice-giving or a string of “techniques.” My engagement is generally aimed at the powerful fundamentals of psychotherapy. These include things like: helping me understand my clients better; helping clients to understand themselves better; facilitating clients’ emotional awareness and expression in the present moment; identifying relationship patterns; contemplating symbolic meanings of various events in a clients’ life; and exploring what’s unresolved from the past and most important in the present and the future.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I still remember what psychotherapy felt like for me in the beginning - it was intense because I was not comfortable being vulnerable, showing and feeling my deepest emotions, and focusing solely on myself for the hour. I felt shame sometimes, and I shamed myself for what felt “self indulgent” at first. I feared therapy would reveal that something was wrong with me. On the contrary, therapy has helped me immensely to accept and respect myself, and to be a better person overall. It has allowed me to deepen my relationships as I’ve become more open and more comfortable with vulnerability. I am so grateful that I can remember how challenging therapy was in the beginning, because I know some of my clients will feel this same uneasiness as they adjust to therapy, and I understand it. I make it my top priority to help my clients feel safe, respected, and accepted, and to encourage them to trust in the process of therapy and all it has to offer.
