When I began as a counselor, there was only one internship/residency location for which I was willing to endure a longer commute: the local LGBTQ+ center. From the moment I received the offer, I knew I would specialize in this important work. Between my years there and my lived experience as a queer woman, I am familiar with many common challenges, unique concerns, strengths, and best practices. Furthermore, I will always seek current information and new research to best serve this group.

Most counselors see clients with anxiety. It is often reported as the most common mental health condition globally and affects about 1 in 3 U.S. adults. I chose to specialize in anxiety treatment because, with such widespread effects, I believe we owe the community more as a profession. My approach encourages clients to explore any chronic stress patterns/burnout while learning coping skills and long-term anxiety management strategies.

Self-esteem challenges often go hand-in-hand with anxiety and are common within the LGBTQ+ community. Equally importantly, whatever good people may take from counseling must continue to be fueled by them, both between sessions and after counseling ends. People who develop a more confident or kinder self-concept are most likely to apply strategies to maintain their own wellbeing and pursue a fulfilling life. As such, I strive to support clients in developing intrinsic self-worth and empowerment.

Sometimes, we have to de-escalate intense emotions and body sensations before or throughout processing. I often guide clients through practicing physiological relaxation, grounding, breathing, and mindfulness skills. This is also referred to as a "bottom-up" therapy approach. We can apply these strategies as-needed.

Many people struggle with a sense of isolation and disconnectedness, both from one another and the world around them. We are tenants of an incredible natural environment with many invisible, often unnoticed healing elements. In studying ecotherapy, I have found—and even presented—research on myriad ways we are impacted by light, soil, water, plants, animals, and more. If outdoor or walk-and-talk therapy is not for you, we can still collaborate to enrich your life with nature.

When I first read "On Becoming a Person" (1961), I was surprised by the modern feel of concepts Carl Rogers presented. Present-day person-centered therapy is the core therapeutic orientation that I apply. The basis of treatment is authenticity, empathetic connection, and unconditional respect with a goal of helping you reduce the gap between "who you are/where you're at" and "who you want to become/where you'd like to go".
