I have 5 years of experience diagnosing and treating schizophrenia symptoms. I have helped clients better communicate about their experience(s), identify needed supports, and gain clarity in regards to their life values and goals. Past clients have learned how to make plans to best manage their symptoms through coping skills and medication management (if needed).

I started working with individuals who struggle with bipolar disorder while in graduate school. While I believe that DBT is a great approach for many who struggle with such a disorder, I have found that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy helps all people solidify their values and align their lives to reflect personal priorities regardless of being in a manic, depressive, or remission state.

Anxiety impacts nearly 40 million Americans each year. This is the most common struggle I hear about in my practice and has become a specialty by way of my client's needs. From my theoretical approach of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, I help clients discover their internal messages, accept unwanted feelings, explore values, and make real-life steps towards desired change.

(ACT, pronounced as the word "act") is a form of counseling and is derived from a branch of clinical behavior analysis. The objective of ACT is not to eliminate difficult feelings, but rather be present with what life presents and "move toward valued behavior" despite difficulties. ACT invites individuals to better accept unpleasant feelings and learn to not overreact to them. It also allows individuals to limit avoidance behavior where they are invoked.

Mindfulness is a practice that helps individuals maintain a moment-by-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment. Mindfulness also involves acceptance, meaning that individuals pay attention to their thoughts and feelings without judging them. When mindfulness is practiced, thoughts focus on the present moment rather than relying on past feelings or future worries to guide internal talk.

Motivational Interviewing is a technique in which the counselor becomes a helper in the change process and expresses acceptance of the individual. This style of counseling can help resolve ambivalence which prevents individuals from realizing personal goals. Motivational interviewing builds on Carl Rogers' optimistic and humanistic theories about people's capabilities to exercise free choice and grow through the process of self-actualization.

CBT is an intervention that aims to improve mental health by focusing on challenging and changing cognitive distortions (e.g. thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes) and behaviors; improving emotional regulation; and developing personal coping strategies that target current problems.

Spiritual abuse is an event or series of experiences a person endures from a religious leader or organization. It can be acutely traumatizing at the time, but it is more often slow, subtle, and insidious. Religious trauma is the ongoing effect that spiritual abuse can have on a person. Entering a church building can bring a rush of emotions. Hearing certain phrases, hymns or songs, or specific verses of the Bible read or quoted can trigger a trauma response.

Most people who go through traumatic events may have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping, but with time and good self-care, they usually get better. If the symptoms get worse, last for months or even years, and interfere with your day-to-day functioning, you may have PTSD. PTSD is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety. (Mayoclinic.org)
