Generational trauma can impact how we relate to one another, because it impacts the way that we see ourselves, the view of the world, and how we interact with the world. It is a trauma that happened to someone before you on your generational line and then is passed on through behaviors. This could impact the way that this parent views love, relationships, money, and so much more.
Being a marriage and family therapist, I am understanding of the systemic nature of how we live our lives. I see anxiety and depression as symptoms of an unhealthy society. But we can’t fix the world without first shifting ourselves. We can make lasting change when we turn within to help us respond and not react to the world around us.
Both “Big T” trauma or several “Little T” traumas and abuse is something I find to be at the heart of many of our issues. Whether it happened directly to us or to someone higher up on our family tree. It helps me teach others to realize people are often running around with a wounded inner child often taking it out on others. Something we cannot control but we can use this to increase our awareness and be less reactive towards others.
As a marriage and family therapist by training, I see people as a make up of systems. They come from a family, a friendship group, a community. I understand that lasting change often means the system has to change. I strive to support people as they navigate what they can and cannot control to step into a life that serves them.
Trauma therapy is at the heart of what I do. I have been working with those who have gone through verbal, physical, and sexual traumas with 4 years of experience in this field. I have work with people right after they share there story and those who need to process it years later, maybe a second or third time. I understand the importance of treating trauma as it is often the root of other issues like depression and anxiety.
I use cognitive based therapies to help people address their mind blocks. I work with people to see if they are struggling with negative self talk and deeply held core beliefs that get in the way of living the life they want. I use a lot of mindfulness to help people gain more awareness and support self compassion to finding get the change they want.
