Our most intimate relationships often have the biggest effect on our overall mental health, and I work with individuals & couples to try to understand each other & themselves on a deeper, emotional level. I welcome clients of every kind, and couples throughout the beginning, middle, or even ending of their relationships. I enjoy working with couples in the aging population, co-parenting, LGBTQIA+ community, and non-traditional dyads such as consensual non-monogamous (CNM).
Being diagnosed with a chronic illness, either personally or to someone you love, can be debilitating. I've worked with individuals, couples, and families navigating grief, loss, and illness. I also consider mental health to be a chronic illness and can be disruptive if not addressed in a safe space. Instead of talking about the illness itself (leave that to your medical team), we'll dig into thoughts, feelings, and emotions that surround the sickness.
Anxiety can prohibit a person from living a truly joyful and meaningful life. If you say you have anxiety, I believe you! And then we'll work together to find out why and how you can take steps to process and improve the anxious thoughts and feelings you are experiencing.
My work with couples is direct and interactive, with heavy influences from Emotionally Focused Therapy and Imago Principles for navigating conflict. AJ was fortunate to attend trainings directly with Dr. Sue Johnson, the founder of EFT and Harville Hendrix, the founder of Imago for interactive examples of how to integrate EFT and Imago into couples counseling.
You are the expert on your own life. I don't do cookie-cutter therapy and each session is led by you, processing the things YOU want to focus on. AJ believes our relationships (even the one we have with ourselves) is the foundation for mental relief of the symptoms that often keep us stuck or immobilized. And AJ focuses heavily on the relationship between each client and himself to model healthy boundaries and ways of positively interacting.
Early life experiences impact us deeply, so understanding where you came from and how you got to this place is essential for any meaningful change. And no, I don't think we'll be blaming your parent's for everything that is wrong, but I do think we need to see how early life patterns present themselves in the here-and-now.
If you're feeling down and having difficulty functioning, I will explore the roots of these depressive feelings and see if we can co-create a new and different story from this point forward. We all have good days and bad days, but if the bad days are far outnumbering the good, this might be the clue that beginning therapy could be beneficial.
Our worlds turn upside down with every birth, graduation, wedding, divorce, & most importantly death. Life transitions are usually met with mixed emotions, anxiety, depression, despair, or even heart-exploding joy. I try to create a safe space for us to explore the many options and decisions that arise at or around a big life transition.
Sometimes a man can feel more comfortable opening up to another man about some of the deeper topics, especially when starting therapy for the very first time. The majority of my practice is therapy with individual male clients. I can’t talk sports with you (no, seriously I grew up with a single Mom and two sisters) but I take a direct and active approach in helping unpack some of the inside-stuff that has you stuck or struggling. I also specialize in working with gay & kink communities.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a specialized and specific way to treat trauma that was developed to assist combat veterans returning from war process the difficult things they witnessed on the battlefield. AJ was trained in EMDR by Philip Manfield, one of the originating clinicians trained by the founder, Francine Shapiro, himself. EMDR helps desensitize and reprocess traumatic memories and helps traumatized individuals move forward.
