About My Clients
18+ years experience providing psychotherapy to clients ages 13+ with a broad range of concerns. I work well with clients who seek support, guidance, and and encouragement necessary to create and maintain value based action each day (living with purpose). Clients tell me they are comforted and motivated by the empathetic, down-to-earth, and solution focused style I offer. I am passionate about creating a strong therapeutic alliance with all clients as the foundation for meaningful change.
My Background and Approach
I earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Psychology and Social Work from University of Iowa (2000) and a Masters of Science in Social Work from University of Wisconsin (2005). My professional training includes the application of evidenced based practices including cognitive behavioral therapy (Advanced Training CBT Certificate completed in 2019), solution focused therapy, EMDR, acceptance and commitment therapy, grief counseling, and mindfulness based psychotherapy. I enjoy being able to draw from a variety of perspectives and approaches that meet my clients' specific needs and treatment preferences. I’ve practiced in behavioral health for the last 20 years, working in a variety of settings including chemical dependency outpatient treatment centers, group psychotherapy practices, and co-located school based mental health programs.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe in the dignity and worth of every human being and strive to empower a diverse communty of clients. Diversity makes our world stronger and better. As a married gay man with an adopted child of color, I have much appreciation and understanding for the needs of members of the LGBTQAI community. I am passionate about serving marginalized communities including members of the BIPOC community.
